Standard printed plates: from £14.49
This is the plate most cars leave the showroom with: flat black characters printed onto a reflective acrylic plate. It is our least expensive option and there is nothing second-rate about it. You get the same BS AU 145e components, the same legal markings and the same 3 yearwarranty as on our most expensive plate.
If you are replacing a cracked or faded plate, or putting a new registration on the car, this is the sensible buy.
3D gel plates: from £22.49
For £8 more per plate, 3D gel gives you raised, domed characters with a glossy finish. It is a noticeable step up without being showy, which makes it a popular choice for anyone who wants the car to look a bit sharper for a modest outlay. A pair comes in at £44.98.
4D plates: from £22.49
4D Gloss plates cost the same as 3D gel, so between those two the choice comes down purely to looks. The characters are laser-cut from 3mm acrylic for a crisp, squared-off finish. 4D Gel adds a gel resin top to each character and starts at £24.99.
Above those sit our two premium styles, both from £29.99. Ghost uses black-on-black raised characters for a subtle shadowed effect. Please note these Ghost plates are completely different from the illegal ‘Ghost’ plates where some characters are invisible to ANPR cameras. We do notsell illegal Ghost plates.
Elevate lifts the characters well clear of the plate so they appear to float.
Pressed metal plates: from £22.49
Pressed metal plates are made from lightweight aluminium with embossed characters, and they are a common sight on vans and commercial vehicles. The black and silver version costs the same and suits classic cars. Bear in mind that black and silver plates are only road legal on vehicles built before 1 January 1980 and taxed in the historic class.
What changes the price?
• One plate or two (or three!). You can buy a single front, rear plate or trailer plate separately, or a pair, or all three. There is no need to replace all plates if only one is damaged.
• Size and shape. Most cars take a standard plate. Short plates start at £24.49, 4×4 rear platesat £19.49 and oversize rear plates at £15.49.
• Delivery. Standard delivery is £6.99 and next day delivery is £9.99. Collecting from us on Nelson Street avoids the charge altogether.
• Fixings. A fitting kit is £4.99 if you need one.
What you never pay extra for is legality. The British Standard mark, our supplier details and the 3 year warranty come with every plate.
Is the cheapest plate the best value?
It depends where you are purchasing it from! From us, yes. You will find cheaper plates online, often from sellers who ask for no documents. That is the warning sign. A registered supplier has to check your ID and your entitlement to the registration, and a plate that does not meet the rules can mean a fine of up to £1,000 and a failed MOT. Saving a few pounds looks poor value against that.
