What materials can I choose from for my number plates?

Premium Acrylic

A modern, glossy plastic number plate. Excellent durability and resistance to fading – most likely to be similar to what your vehicle was fitted with when new.

Pressed Aluminium

A lightweight metal plate with embossed characters, often used on commercial vehicles.

Black & Silver Premium Acrylic

A modern acrylic plate with black background and silver characters, ideal when you want a vintage aesthetic with the benefits of contemporary materials.

Black & Silver Pressed Aluminium

A heritage-style metal plate with raised silver characters on a black background, often chosen for classic or historic vehicles.

Front Plate Size

Most modern cars will use a standard size plate. If you have a short registration number, you may choose a shorter plate – this is entirely down to personal preference. If choosing a shorter plate, do check to make sure there are no existing screw holes that may be exposed.

Rear Plate Size

Most modern cars use a standard size rear plate. Some larger cars, such as a Range Rover or BMW X5, can accept a deeper rear plate. Please measure your car to make sure your plate choice will fit.

What font style should I choose?

Printed

The most common type of number plate. Traditional printed plates with flat lettering and a reflective background on high quality acrylic.

3D Gel

Raised gel characters on a reflective plate surface, giving a premium “domed” look.

4D 3mm Gloss

Laser-cut acrylic 3mm deep characters in a high-gloss finish, creating a sharp “boxed” 3-D effect.

4D 3mm + Gel

Laser-cut acrylic 3mm deep characters with a gel resin finish, for a premium textured plate.

Ghost

Solid black-on-black raised 4D characters where the depth creates a subtle shadowed effect for a sleek “ghost” look.

Elevate

Premium plates where the 4D digits are significantly raised above the plate background so it looks like they are floating.

Fitting Guide for UK Number Plates

Fitting your new number plates is quick and simple. Follow these steps for a clean, secure finish:

1. Prepare

You’ll need:

  • Your new Wylie number plates
  • A fixing kit (screws, caps or sticky pads)
  • Drill and screwdriver (if screw-fixing)
  • Cleaning cloth and mild cleaner

2. Remove the old plates

Carefully take off your existing plates — they may be attached with screws, caps or adhesive pads.

3. Clean the surface and plates

Wipe the plates and the area where the new plates will go with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Dry both with a clean cloth and ensure they are dry, smooth and free of dirt or grease. 

4. Position your plates

Hold each plate in place to check they are centred and aligned properly — on the front of the car they should be secured to the bumper, and on the rear they should be fastened to the tailgate or bumper. Use your old plates as a template for the holes on the new plates if needed.

5. Fix in place

Choose the appropriate method for your vehicle:

  • Screw Fixing: Drill holes in the number plate (if required), screw securely into the pre-drilled holes in your vehicle’s bumper or bodywork and cover with coloured caps. Use a screwdriver to tighten the screws securely. Ensure the screws are flush with the surface of the number plate. Make sure the screws are tightened adequately without over-tightening, which could damage the plates or the vehicle’s bodywork.
  • Adhesive Pads: Stick 6 pads vertically, evenly spaced, across the back of the plate, peel the backing and press firmly onto the surface. Apply even pressure for a strong bond.

6. Final checks

  • Once fitted, make sure the plates are straight, secure and there is no movement. Gently tug the plates to test their stability.
  • Remove any protective film.
  • Check that there is enough space around the plates, that nothing obstructs the car lights or indicators and that the plates are clearly visible from a distance.
