A road legal number plate in Northern Ireland has to meet the same rules as one anywhere else in the UK. Those rules cover what the plate is made of, its colours, the size and spacing of the characters, and the small print along the bottom edge.
None of it is complicated, but the details matter. Here is each requirement in plain terms, with the measurements, so you can check the plates you have or order new ones with confidence.
Who Sets the Road Legal Number Plate Rules in Northern Ireland?
Number plate law is UK-wide. The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001 apply here just as they do in England, Scotland and Wales, and the DVLA in Swansea has handled vehicle registration for Northern Ireland since 2014.
The DVA still runs the MOT, so its examiners are the people most likely to look closely at your plates. On the road, enforcement falls to the PSNI. The rules are the same whether your registration is in the Northern Ireland format or the GB one.
What a road legal plate must have
Every plate fitted since 1 September 2021 has to meet British Standard BS AU 145e. Under the government’s rules for number plates, that means:
- A reflective background. White at the front, yellow at the rear, with no pattern.
- Solid black characters in the standard font. They can be raised, as on 3D gel and 4D plates, but they must be a single shade of black and must not be removable or reflective.
- The British Standard number. “BS AU 145e” has to be marked on the plate.
- The supplier’s details. A name and postcode, so the plate can be traced to whoever made it.
Plates fitted before that date to the previous standard are still legal, so there is no need to replace a sound set.
The one exception on colour is for historic vehicles. Those built before 1 January 1980 and taxed in the historic vehicle class can carry traditional black and silver plates.
Character sizes and spacing
The measurements are fixed, and they are the same for Northern Ireland and GB registrations.
| Measurement | Cars | Motorcycles |
| Character height | 79mm | 64mm |
| Character width (except 1 and I) | 50mm | 44mm |
| Stroke thickness | 14mm | 10mm |
| Space between characters | 11mm | 10mm |
| Space between groups | 33mm | 30mm |
| Margin around the edge | 11mm | At least 11mm |
Moving a character or closing a gap to make a registration read as a word is the most common way a plate falls foul of the rules.
Motorcycles registered since 1 September 2001 carry a plate at the rear only, with the registration set over two lines.
Is there a legal plate size?
Not as such. The law fixes the characters, the gaps between them and the margin, and the plate simply has to be big enough to hold all of that. For a seven-character registration, that gives the familiar standard car plate of 520mm by 111mm.
A shorter registration can go on a shorter plate, and some larger 4x4s take a deeper plate at the rear. What you cannot do is shrink the characters to suit the space.
Flags, identifiers and green flashes
Zero-emission vehicles can carry a green badge on the left-hand side of the plate. You can choose a national flag badge based on your location.
One useful point for anyone crossing the border: you do not need a UK sticker to drive in Ireland, whatever is on your plate.
What is not allowed
- Altered spacing, or fixing bolts placed to change how a character reads.
- Italic, stylised or two-tone lettering.
- Tinted plates, films, sprays or covers.
- Background patterns.
Get it wrong and you could be fined up to £1,000, and the vehicle will fail its MOT.
